I have to start this page with an apology to Edna Walling. Remarkably enough, having done a very quick search, no one else appears to have lifted the title of her iconic book, A Gardener's Log. Any way it is my intention to post thoughts on gardening with flowers and vegetables and the garden industry generally. I don't claim to be a gardener like Edna Walling or like most of the people I hope will read this, but I can give a grower's perspective to any gardening questions you might have.

Trailing, Tumbling, Falling Plentiful Pansies & Violas

Viola X wihttrockiana Tumbles. A number of "Trailing Pansies" have been released over the past couple of years, it's fair to say that the flower breeders are tumbling over each other to get their trailing Pansies & Violas into garden centres. We have happily raided all the breeding offer to offer the widest range of the best colours although typically with such new breeding there is still a relatively limited range.
Spreading appears to be the latest thing with breeders which is a good thing following on the heels of years of breeding more and more 'compactness' into plants. Compactness suits the 'packs' and small pots mass produced in Europe and the US but gardeners began to get very frustrated that their plants just would not fill out in their gardens. It's my assumption that after spreading Petunias were stumbled upon and proved to be a huge success breeders went looking for the next big trailing thing. Pansy & Viola won't spread so dramatically as Petunias but they spill well from hanging baskets and raised beds. They definitely benefit from larger containers and manage the trick of spreading and filling as they go really well.
From now on, Pansies & Violas love all the sun they can get. No chance of being burned by extreme temperatures.
